A Truly Global Operation - Gist

Gist employs 5,000 people in the UK and Europe with its board of directors and 200 staff based at the Chineham Business Park head office.

With its head office located in Basingstoke, Gist is an international supply chain specialist serving the UK, Europe, Asia Pacific and America. Handling big name accounts, just some of its customers include Marks & Spencer, British Airways and Carlsberg.

All of Gist’s business consultants’ global corporate support functions and most of its international operations are managed from Basingstoke. With operations in countries including Holland, the Czech Republic, France, Spain and Austria, most locations in Europe can be reached within a few hours thanks to Basingstoke’s proximity to major roads, rail links and London and regional airports.

Easy access to comprehensive communication links is also a key requirement for the company’s logistics operations within the UK, ensuring that the business is always close to its customers, suppliers and operational centres.

When Gist decided to move its head office, several locations were under consideration. The company had a clear idea of what it wanted: to stay in the same region; have a better, bigger, more modern building which was high quality but not too showy; to benefit from good communication links and to ensure that its people had good access to a range of useful facilities.

Already something of a ‘hot spot’ location for logistics companies with a good employment pool, Basingstoke ticked all these boxes and more, and the Gist head office was moved from Aldershot to Chineham Business Park in 2002.

Mike Bousfield, Director of HR, believes that the business park caters well for Gist’s employees. Onsite facilities include a crèche and gym; a free bus runs to and from the town centre. Staff are also part of a burgeoning local community in and around Basingstoke, and benefit from the town’s comprehensive leisure facilities, which have seen substantial investment and improvement in recent years, as well as the proximity of the countryside.

Operating within a progressive local business environment, Gist feels it is important to play its part in the community, and runs initiatives such as offering post-16 students work experience and training opportunities and supporting local charities.
