Senior Officer for Business Growth
The south coast’s strong maritime heritage and cutting-edge R&D attract a growing network of scientific, advanced engineering and high-tech manufacturing companies.
Employing more than 360,000 people and contributing £19 billion gross value added, the UK has the largest marine sector in Europe. Hampshire is right at the heart of this, with a robust marine industry ranging from shipping, boatbuilding and marine engineering to marine technology, cruise and leisure marine. It is an ideal location to establish a marine business, with more than 3,000 already based here. It is also home to Land Rover BAR's headquarters in Portsmouth and at the centre of their campaign to bring the America’s Cup home to Britain where it all began.
Hampshire is the chosen location for many of the major companies operating in the UK’s marine industry including those with specialisms in marine autonomous systems, composites and boat building:
Southampton is home to a world-leading cruise industry worth over £350m per annum to the local economy. The city is also the UK’s number one port for vehicle imports and exports, and the UK’s second largest container terminal. Commercial port and shipping activities are primarily based around Southampton’s Solent area, at Fawley refinery, Hamble oil terminal and various commercial wharves along the Rivers Itchen and Test.
Portsmouth Harbour contains several defence establishments; the Naval Base, the armament storage sites at Frater and Bedenham; Fleetlands (used for the repair and maintenance of helicopters), Horsea and Whale island which is used for military training purposes.
Hampshire has over 25 marinas on offer plus a variety of marine development sites and other commercial property options. It is also home to the Solent Enterprise Zone at Daedalus which is especially suited to advanced engineering businesses operating in the marine industry due to its coastal location, marine slipway and dedicated Centre of Excellence in Manufacturing and Advanced Skills Training (CEMAST). The Centre is part of Fareham College and provides specialist courses in aerospace, marine and mechanical engineering. The Enterprise Zone also offers a discount on business rates and grants are on offer from the Solent Enterprise Zone Advanced Manufacturing Expansion Fund for new businesses.
