Home to more than 3,000 marine and maritime companies Hampshire's south coast location , supply chain and  world leading research facilities create a thriving marine sector. Employing more than 360,000 people and contributing £19 billion gross value added, the UK has the largest marine sector in Europe.  Hampshire is right at the heart of this, with a robust marine industry ranging from shipping, boatbuilding and marine engineering to marine technology, cruise and leisure marine.  It is an ideal location to establish a marine business, with more than 3,000 already based here. It is also home to Land Rover BAR's headquarters in Portsmouth and at the centre of their campaign to bring the America’s Cup home to Britain where it all began.

Hampshire’s Solent Region is the internationally renowned centre of the UK marine industry located in the south of the county.

Southampton

Southampton is home to a world-leading cruise industry worth over £350m per annum to the local economy. The city is also the UK’s number one port for vehicle imports and exports, and the UK’s second largest container terminal.

Portsmouth

Portsmouth Harbour contains several defence establishments; the Naval Base, the armament storage sites at Frater and Bedenham; Fleetlands, Horsea and Whale island which is used for military training purposes.

Hampshire has over 25 marinas on offer plus a variety of marine development sites and other commercial property options. It is also home to the Solent Enterprise Zone at Daedalus which is especially suited to advanced engineering businesses operating in the marine industry due to its coastal location, marine slipway and dedicated Centre of Excellence in Manufacturing and Advanced Skills Training (CEMAST).

With three universities with specialist marine capabilities, Hampshire is at the cutting edge of innovation and technology for the marine industry. The type of support businesses can access via the universities in the area is varied but includes consultancy services, design, prototyping and test facilities.

University of Southampton

The research intensive University of Southampton is the leading maritime university in the UK and has an excellent reputation for its work with industry.

The Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute has long been regarded as the best maritime research centre in the UK.

It is a ground-breaking collaboration between the University of Southampton and the Lloyd’s Register Group operating from a state-of-the-art marine technology centre at the university, BAE Systems Maritime, CJR Propulsion, Shell Shipping and Rolls Royce are just some of the businesses the Institute has worked with.

The University of Southampton is also a key partner at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton.

Southampton Solent University

The Warsash Maritime Academy at Southampton Solent University provides first class training, consultancy and research to the maritime industry worldwide specialising in the fields of international shipping, commercial yachts, offshore oil & gas and the renewables industry.  

University of Portsmouth

 As a marine business in Hampshire you have access to the exceptional marine facilities available at The Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS) in Portsmouth which has been at the forefront of marine biology for over 70 years.  The Institute’s coastal location means that it is within metres of the sea providing access to various marine ecosystems.  Businesses have access to a new £2 million aquarium and laboratory, a permanently moored floating research platform at Langstone Harbour and a 5.4m high speed research vessel, The RV Calypso, for inshore surveying and sampling.
