Invest in Hampshire - Research Excellence

Research Excellence

Innovative and world-leading technologies and knowledge are developed each day in Hampshire. The county is home to several centres of research excellence providing an unrivalled competitive edge to the companies in the key sectors they are affiliated with.

Marine

The University of Southampton is the leading maritime university in the UK with world-class facilities including the Lloyd’s Register Maritime Centre of Excellence and the wind tunnels of the Wolfson Unit for Marine Technology and Industrial Aerodynamics (WUMTIA), where engineers also frequently undertake consultancy work for Formula One teams. The National Oceanography Centre Southampton (NOCS) is one of the world’s leading centres for research and education in marine and earth science and for the development of marine technology, and provides large-scale infrastructure and support for the entire UK marine research community.

Maritime research at Southampton Solent University has been in four main areas: maritime human factors and resource management, behavioural markers, maritime environmental management, and ship hydrodynamics. The University’s Warsash Maritime Academy provides education, training, consultancy and research to the international shipping and off-shore oil industries.

Aerospace & Defence

Based in Farnborough, QinetiQ is Europe’s largest technology company and one of the world’s finest defence research institutions. The company’s research labarotories have pioneered a range of technologies including radar and liquid crystal displays over more than six decades.

The University of Portsmouth’s Aerospace Materials  research group specialises in applied research into fatigue and fracture of aerospace materials and components with industrial collaborators including Rolls Royce, the US Air Force, the MOD, QinetiQ, Astrium and Westland Aerostructures.

The University of Southampton’s Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre (UTC) for Computational Engineering applies modern computational tools, methods and environments to problems in aerospace engineering and related fields.  The University’s Airbus Noise Technology Centre (ANTC) works towards meeting the industry's target of cutting perceived aircraft noise in half by 2020

Financial & Professional Services

The University of Portsmouth hosts several research centres including the Accounting and Finance Research Group which conducts research in corporate governance, auditing, financial reporting and in the regulation of financial reporting. Research is supported by all UK accountancy bodies and industry members, such as PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise in the Business and Management category, Portsmouth Business School (PBS) submitted the 15th largest number of research active staff and was 27th on a weighted quality basis placing it as the highest south coast university in the UK and the highest new university in this category.
