A business dating back 140 years is today one of the county’s leading manufacturing companies which remains in the same family from which it was founded in the 1860s. Originally a company which made lifts to move ships' cargo, Stannah is now a leading household name selling stairlifts in over 40 countries worldwide.
The Stannah Group, which has five locations in Andover, not only specialises in stairlift manufacture but also has expertise in commercial lifts including escalators, moving walkways, passenger lifts, platform lifts, goods and service lifts, refurbishment of existing lifts and new bespoke lifts.
The company’s extensive product ranges and efficient manufacturing operations make them a market leader recognised by the industry through a range of accolades including the Queen’s Award for Enterprise presented to the company for the fourth time in 2010.
Six members of the Stannah family are involved with the business today, “The Stannah Group moved to Andover in 1974. In those days we were a small family business with less that 50 staff,” says Jon Stannah, Managing Director of Stannah Stairlifts. “We now employ over 600 people in Andover and 1500 in total. We have been very fortunate to be part of the growth and prosperity of Andover over the last 35 years.”
“Hampshire is a great location for us, it provides us with access to a workforce with the right skills, fantastic transport links, we have great connections with the universities in the area and the quality of life in this part of the UK is second to none.”
The company also prides itself on a strong commitment to corporate social responsibility with the family business ethos expanding out into a wide range of activities which benefit the local community.
