Supreme Freight - a driving force for 32 Years

With its strong multimodal transport links, and close proximity to the Port of Southampton and Heathrow Airport, Hampshire is fast becoming a hot spot for logistics businesses looking to expand or relocate, and Supreme Freight Services, the shipping, forwarding and logistics company which has its head office in Southampton, is a business clearly benefitting from their strategic location in the South.

With a turnover of £67.6m, and a workforce of 30 staff, Supreme Freight has recently expanded its office base at Millbrook in Southampton. The company was founded back in 1986, specialising in the then not so fashionable Chinese market which, as it turns out, could not have been a better choice.

Chris Green, Managing Director, said: “Perhaps it was more luck than judgement, but China really took off, and we have been very fortunate in the growth there. We have joint venture partners in Shenzhen and Guangzhou, and an office in Hong Kong. Keeping our headquarters here in Hampshire, gives us the edge and enables us to live up to the world-leading reputation that we’ve worked so hard to achieve.”

One of the attractions of the region is the large pool of freight and shipping talent available. While from a technological and customs point of view, a freight forwarding office could be sited almost anywhere in the country, being close to Southampton city centre, and its main rail station, the company is able to attract and retain expert staff. Chris commented: “Several of our staff have been here since the beginning. We work really hard at building authentic and strong relationships with our clients and we see ourselves as a part of their operation, which makes us stand out in this competitive market place.”

Supreme Freight is also pressing ahead with plans for a new office in Vietnam, in the main commercial centre, Ho Chi Minh City. Vietnam is emerging as one of the major new centres of production, as there have been a few signs for the company recently that the headlong growth in Chinese manufacturing is slowing. 

Chris is as active in the company as ever, and with his son on board as sales director he has no intention of taking it out of family ownership. “Why would I?” he commented. “We are strong, growing, and I enjoy what I do. I love coming to work, travelling and meeting people. That’s what it’s always been about for me.”
