The Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has announced the winners of Phase 1 of the UK National 5G Test Beds and Trials programme that will provide major showcases for applications of 5G in important sectors of the UK economy. We are delighted to see that the 5GIC is working closely with three of the test beds announced. These new test beds will build on the pioneering work done by 5GIC which has been supported from its inception by Enterprise M3 with a £5m investment from the Government’s Local Growth Fund.
The 5GIC is the largest open innovation centre for 5G development in the world. The centre has 26 corporate members and 250 small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) in its wider network. Supported from the beginning by the Enterprise M3 Local Enterprise Partnership, 5GIC established the UK’s first dedicated SME small scale 5G test facility at the Basingstoke Hub, and more recently the world’s first 5G digital creative hub for the internationally renowned Guildford and Aldershot digital games cluster.
Dr Mike Short, Chairman Enterprise M3 welcomed this further extension of 5G test beds stating “Enterprise M3 are working closely with 5GIC to highlight the opportunities of 5G technology to SMEs. Trialling this new technology through test beds will put areas like ourselves at the forefront for implementation. We are establishing test beds at key locations across our area including within our enterprise zone at Basing View in Basingstoke, Longcross Park and at TechForest in Whitehill & Bordon.”
