Investing in Innovation - Merck Chemicals Ltd

Merck, a world leading Science and Technology company and named one of the top 10 global employers in 2017 has been innovating in Hampshire since the opening of the Chilworth technical centre in 2000.

Merck is a leading science and technology company in healthcare, life science and performance materials. Around 50,000 employees work to further develop technologies that improve and enhance life – from biopharmaceutical therapies to treat cancer or multiple sclerosis, through cutting-edge systems for life science research and production, to liquid crystals for smartphones and LCD televisions.

Chilworth Technical Centre on Southampton Science Park is one of Merck‘s innovation hubs, focusing on the development and commercialization of materials for state-of-the-art and future electronics used in emerging displays and electronics applications. Did you know, for example, that a key part of the technology used in 3D televisions (which require cinema-type glasses) was invented and developed at Merck’s Chilworth Technical Centre?

The research and development conducted at Merck’s Chilworth Technical Centre revolves around three major projects. “Printed Electronics” are expected to revolutionize the manufacturing of electronic circuits and will play a significant role in the “Internet of Things”. “Reactive Mesogens” are the source of both 3D display technology and a key component of making smartphone displays readable in bright sunlight. Lastly, “Flexible Display Materials” are enabling the next generation of conformal and hardwearing displays, to be made of plastic, instead of glass.

Merck’s Chilworth Technical Centre is pushing the boundaries in materials technology, maintaining Merck’s position as one of the world’s leading suppliers of materials for the electronics and displays industry.
